Eleven Practical Nursing (PN) students from Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) were recognized during a traditional Pinning Ceremony held Wednesday, July 29, on the college’s Sandersville Campus.

The Pinning Ceremony takes place at the conclusion of the program and marks a significant milestone in a nursing student’s journey, symbolizing the completion of their educational requirements and their readiness to sit for the state licensure examination. It is also a cherished tradition that formally welcomes them into the nursing profession.

“We are proud of what these students have achieved,” shared Rebecca Ward, Practical Nursing Instructor at OFTC. “They have overcome challenges, remained focused on their goals, and will impact the lives of their patients and communities. We look forward to seeing the difference they will make in healthcare.”

Michele Strickland, OFTC’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, challenged graduates to carry compassion, empathy and kindness into every patient interaction.

“Every patient you serve and every family you comfort will be touched not only by your knowledge and technical skills but also by your compassion, empathy and kindness,” Strickland said.

The tradition of the pinning ceremony dates to the Crusades, when caregivers were honored with Maltese crosses for their service. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, carried the tradition forward in the 1860s by presenting pins to graduating nurses as a symbol of their dedication and achievement.

During the ceremony, each graduate received their nursing pin, lit the symbolic candle, and recited the Nightingale Pledge in honor of Florence Nightingale’s legacy.
