From CB radios to computers, Cam Graham always enjoyed tinkering with electricity and electronics. Everyone who knew him knew he’d thrive in a career where he could put skill to his passions.

“My high school counselor talked with me about Oconee Fall Line Technical College’s (OFTC) dual enrollment program during high school,” Graham shared. “I decided to give it a try and enrolled in classes my junior year.”

Graham completed the Electrical Control Diploma program and graduated from high school with both his high school diploma and a recognized credential from OFTC.

From the quality Electrical Control program to the promise of quick career training, Graham knew he made the right choice in getting a jump start on his career.

“OFTC was close to home, and by participating in dual enrollment, I knew I would learn the skills I needed to land a career before I graduated high school,” he added.

Choosing OFTC

Once Graham enrolled in the Electrical Control program, he quickly realized he had made the right decision. The hands-on, lab-focused approach matched his learning style from day one.

“It was very easy to start learning the skills taught in this program,” Graham said. “They start you out on the basics and give you the opportunity to become as advanced as you want to be.”

That hands-on experience proved to be one of the most valuable parts of the program.

“Everything tied together, and having the opportunity to actually do the work and learn while you’re doing it in a controlled environment, it really aided in how you learn and retain the information being taught,” he explained.

Graham also credits his instructors for helping shape his success throughout the program.

“I was surrounded by knowledgeable people who were always willing to help me,” he said.

What started as a basic understanding of electricity quickly grew into something much more advanced.

“I started out with a very basic understanding of electricity and left with the ability to troubleshoot complex circuits and systems.”

Workforce Ready

Those skills quickly translated into career opportunities for Graham.

After completing the program and graduating high school, he immediately stepped into the workforce equipped with the knowledge and confidence to succeed.

“I landed my dream job straight out of school,” Graham said.

At Smurfit Westrock, Graham serves as a multi-skilled mechanic, working across electrical, instrumentation, and millwright disciplines. In his role, he performs preventive maintenance, conducts calibrations, and is frequently called on to troubleshoot complex issues.

Thanks to his training at OFTC, Graham entered the workforce prepared to make an immediate impact.

“My education was the only way I qualified for my job,” he shared. “As a student, I was introduced to many of the same practices I use every day and became familiar with the equipment I now work with on the job.”

That foundation continues to support his growth as he advances in his career.

“My time at OFTC gave me a solid foundation, teaching me the skills I needed while giving me the confidence to continue learning and growing in this field,” Graham added.
