Ten Practical Nursing (PN) students from Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) were recognized during a special Pinning Ceremony held Wednesday, July 30, on the college’s Sandersville Campus.
Held at the conclusion of each cohort, the Pinning Ceremony marks a significant milestone in a nursing student’s journey, symbolizing the completion of their educational requirements and their readiness to sit for the state licensure examination. It is also a cherished tradition that formally welcomes them into the nursing profession.
“We’re incredibly proud of these students,” shared Suann McNutt, Practical Nursing Instructor at OFTC. “They’ve worked hard, pushed through challenges, and demonstrated their passion for providing quality care. We’re confident they’ll make a real difference in the lives of their future patients.”
OFTC President, Erica Harden, encouraged the graduates to always keep compassion in the forefront of their minds. “The most important thing is that you care and show compassion to your patients,” she said. “I know you will be the nurses who soothe the heart and mind with thoughtful gestures; we are so proud of you.”
The tradition of the pinning ceremony dates to the Crusades, when caregivers were honored with Maltese crosses for their service. Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, carried the tradition forward in the 1860s by presenting pins to graduating nurses as a symbol of their dedication and achievement.
During the ceremony, each graduate received their nursing pin, lit the symbolic candle, and recited the Nightingale Pledge in honor of Florence Nightingale’s legacy.
