OFTC – After eight years in construction and working as a millwright, Cole Cauley traded his steel-toed boots for scrubs and a stethoscope—he was heading to nursing school.

“I wanted a career change,” Cauley shared. “I wanted to do something more meaningful and fulfilling. I enjoy helping others and learning new things, which you do every day in nursing.”

Cauley enrolled at Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) and was accepted into the college’s Practical Nursing program in January. Now, he’s preparing to begin his final semester—one step closer to becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

A Supportive Learning Environment

Once enrolled in the PN program, Cauley quickly realized the impact his instructors would have on his journey.

“The instructors are fantastic,” he said. “They go the extra mile to make sure you understand the material and provide all the tools needed to succeed.”

“The whole environment here just feels open and helpful,” he added.

Cauley and his classmates also quickly discovered the demands of their future profession.

“It’s fast-paced and difficult, and we often hear, ‘Welcome to nursing,’ when there are worries about the workload or a time crunch,” he said. “But we understand what they’re preparing us for—the real world of nursing is going to be busy!”

Hands-On Learning, Real-World Preparation

And the hands-on experience Cauley and his classmates receive is helping to bridge the gap between learning and doing.

“What we learn in class directly applies to what we experience in clinicals,” he explained. “The end goal is passing the NCLEX, and our instructors are doing a great job preparing us for that.”

Looking Ahead

Cauley’s transition into nursing has already been rewarding, and he’s excited about what’s next.

“I’m looking forward to officially becoming a nurse, providing quality care for my patients, and continuing my education in nursing even further,” he said.

After graduating this December, Cauley plans to pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN), earn his LPN credentials, and begin working in the field.

“I’m just thankful I have this opportunity—for my wife, the instructors, the classmates, a healthy body, and a strong mind,” he added. “God has blessed me, and I intend to make the most of it.”
