OFTC Practical Nursing Students Receive Pin During Summer 2024 Pinning Ceremony

OFTC PN students during the July 2024 Pinning Ceremony.

Sandersville, Ga., (OFTC) –Seventeen Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC) Practical Nursing (PN) students were honored with a Pinning Ceremony held on the Sandersville Campus, Thursday, July 27.

Each year OFTC holds this ceremony to symbolize the nursing students’ completion of the educational requirements needed to sit for the state board licensure examination and to welcome them into the family of nurses.

“We’re so proud of these practical nursing students and their dedication to complete this demanding program,” said Suann McNutt, PN Instructor on the Sandersville Campus. “They’ve faced challenges along the way, but it hasn’t stopped their drive to achieve their goal of completing the program. We hope these students continue to grow as nurses and we’re confident they’ve been prepared to provide the best care to their patients.”

“It has been such an honor to witness the growth of the students from advisement to pinning,” added Kerrie Fountain, PN Instructor on the Dublin Campus. “Each student started this program dreaming of one day being a nurse and now they are our colleagues. We’re very proud and excited for their futures as nurses and are confident they will be ethical, professional, and confident in their skills and abilities to care for their patients.

The tradition of the pinning ceremony dates to the Crusades when members of the Knight Hospitallers were honored with Maltese crosses after caring for wounded soldiers. Then in the 1860’s Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, continued the tradition when she decided all nursing students who completed nursing training deserved recognition.

During the ceremony each graduating nurse received their pin, lit the ceremonious candle, and recited the Nightingale Pledge in honor of Florence Nightingale.
